Recently my husband Col went to China with his best mate to enjoy some skiing. I sent him on a side mission to source some incredible pearls at Beijing's exclusive pearl market. He kindly obliged and via live Facetime I was able to select a small and statement-making selection of pearl pieces (with the help of Hugh and Mei who both speak Mandarin).

Freshwater cultured pearls: How they form (a little science lesson for you!)

When an irritant enters the shell, the mollusc coats it with layers of nacre, the same iridescent substance that lines its interior. Over time, these layers build into a pearl.
